Back when Scribe Technical was in its infancy, I started a side project – a writing guide for planners and other city builders on how to write better, more polished reports, plans, and other documents.
I knew most of us wouldn’t actually read a book on writing. But, I thought, what if it was built on the real experiences of the pros – those in industry, government, and non-profits who prepare documents, make decisions based on our work, and are known for their terrific ability to cut through the noise and be heard? And what if that provided an engaging way of sharing principles and techniques on clear and effective writing, and fixed the disconnect between the work we do and how it is understood?
Well, guess what? Work picked up. Writing a book takes soooo much time (who knew?!) Instead, I’m giving you all the content I collected and wrote – and will continue to develop – on Substack. I’ll be posting tips and techniques, and, even better, interviews with other experts on their successes and missteps in writing their reports, plans, studies, proposals, letters, and other professional documents. And, it’s all free until September!
By participating, you’ll help to build a community of planners from around the world who want to improve their written communication skills, share what they know and want to know more about, and contribute to greater understanding of the profession.
People expect to have a say in the future of their communities and cities, and their expectations are rising. They want to be included in the civic processes that shape the places where they spend their lives. And, they have a right to understand. At the same time, our organizations are stretched, many of us are overworked, and we just want to get those reports out the door! I’m on a mission to help you improve your written communication skills, to meet the expectations of your audiences, manage the realities of your working environments, and most of all, achieve your visions and goals for the future!
This club is for all of us. What do you want to learn? What can you share with colleagues that will help them become better communicators? Where are the roadblocks? Who are the leaders you want to hear from? There will be lots of opportunities to contribute your thoughts, questions, and experiences.
